This had not been an issue because the clamping mechanism is excellent. It holds the phone firmly in place. It works great with Otterbox defender on iPhone 4 - clever design and easy lock and release mechanism that has plenty of flexibility. Went out on a limb with this purchase but very pleased with this mount that will keep me safer and provides a great place for my phone.
The device is very sturdy and is made of solid heavy-duty plastic. In my installation, I used the included 3M adhesive plate to mount the holder on the dash beside my cd receiver and slightly above and to the left of the gear shift, making it easy to see at a glance and to operate while keeping my right hand close to the steering wheel.
Overall, it's very good quality. At this price, I hoped I was getting a deal on a mount for my Samsung Droid Charge, but the left arm completely blocks the USB so you cannot use a car charger with this mount. This also comes with a dash mount (that is 3M) and a vent mount. Many other brands charge extra for different mounts.
It is the highest quality suction attachment that sticks and also had a clamp action that further sucks it to the window. I cannot pull it off the window pulling really hard (once you flip the suction clamp, it is easy to remove). It hasn't fallen off and I've had it a few weeks now. I am also able to connect the power cord and charge it while it's in the mount, a must feature. It seems pretty durable. Please note, though, that if you live in a cold weather area (like I do) the suction tends to not work as well if you leave it out in the cold.
I was impressed with the quality of the Windshield mount and was happy to see how snug my phone fit. The adjustable arms were such a great idea. If you have horizontal air vents I am sure that mount would work fine but I do not so I did not try the air vent mount. I have a Seido active case and have plenty of room left in the mounts mega grip system.
If it works just great for this phone with the Otterbox, it will work for any phone. I have it on the windshield and haven't had any problems at all, great product! Holds my Samsung Captivate phone secure and stays on the dash or vent. I was able to rotate the mount in all kind of ways, until I secured it the way I want. I will still keep it, but will use it with a little caution. Also, the side grips cover up the volume and make it hard to have the phone plugged in to charge while mounted.
I don't have that fear with the vent mounting. This is surprising good quality for the price. IPhone fits perfectly, and I have enough space to use the charger. Super easy to mount, and use, I love how I can secure \my phone just by adjusting the sides.
