Regarding Fiberglass And Gelcoat Application Guidelines

By Jacque Ryker

It is very important to remember that after using a preval spray you need to strain it using a single use strainer then attach it to the straw from the preval spray. This way, you will be able to have spray that is consistent and heavier. There are special tip to remember when applying the gel coat but you just have to follow the instructions given with the same mixture using an automotive spray gun. You need to use suction or gravity feed spray to thin the gel coat because it will leave an orange peel appearance once used which is necessary.

You just have to remember that to avoid wrinkles you have to move the spray gun on top of the other using the suction feed spray gun because it will a smoother appearance due to the solvents it released. More micro pin holes will be present if the coat that you will be using is heavier; and the suction feed spray gun will leave an excellent finish product.

The solvents of the gel coat will be trapped if it is sprayed under direct sun exposure that causes the product to be dull.

Priming first the gel coat is the proper thing to do first since it will avoid forming blisters then you have to follow number of coatings for specific area of the hull; spraying the waterline needs 4 coats, 3 for the water barrier and 2 for the rest of the vessel. Some suggested that polyester primer may be used although it will become brittle and later on it may chalk and flake off easily but still the duratech vinylester can be used.

Only 5 coats at least is used when doing re-surfacing of the deck of the boat or its hull; auto primer use is discouraged. The repaired area to be sprays should be sand first making sure that it does not exceed over the areas that are not yet sanded with the use of correct grit during the final prep.Always remember that you should not use any tape into the hull after spraying because it will only develop distortions and it can also be an area where the over spray will build up into the tape. It's very common that over spray happened after using gell coat, but a good way to remove this spills is to use a polisher to get rid of fine sprays that reached the unsanded surface.

Observe a distance of 1-2 feet when spraying with a clear gelcoat on top of the its true colors like red, blue, green and so on to give a bigger blend of colors..
